URANN. This was the surname of Elizabeth, wife of Thomas BEEDE, qv, son of the immigrant, Eli BEEDE. It has been suggested that the “U” was originally a 'V” and the surname was VERRIN, of Jersey. VERRIN in.j 1331, would be pron VRAN by someone speaking English. (Muriel Gilliam, Keyport, WA)
NOTE: Old Jersey surnames beginning with a “U” appear to be mostly British, such as Underwood, Upton, Urquhart, Usher, Udall, Utley, Unwin, and Upson. One very old J surname, L'Utlagh, the Outlaw, appeared in Grt. Britain in the English form.
VADIN. See VAUDIN. The fam below orginally spelled the name VODIN, change spelling in the 1700s.
VADEN. This fam descended from early settlers in VA, may possibly be of C.I. origin. Tradition implies a stay in England before coming to America, and the fam may be Hug. Abram, Marice, Isaak and John had headrights under a 1200 acre grant to Wm. Drummond in James City County, VA before 1662. Variants in spelling include VADEN, VODIN, VAUDEN, VAIDEN, VARDEN, VADIN, VOEDEN, VAIDING, VADING, etc. For moreinfo, see FROM THE CHICKAHOMINY TO THE CANEY FORK, by Anis and John Vaden and Edmond and Emmogene V. Bevelheimer, Nashville, TN 1979.

VALPY. "The Valpys are of Italian origin, and the name was originally VOLPI. The family settled at Lucca, Italy before the memory of man and its members have filled the highest offices, ecclesiastical and civil, in the cities of Lucca, Florence and Como. A branch of the family came to Normandy from their Italian expedition under Roger, son of Tancred. Thence they crossed over to Jersey..." Jeremie Valpy was a Hug Minister in G 1597. (Perley; Fosdick; Marblehead VR; Mary H. MacDonald, Farmington, ME; Cutter's GEN FAMS OF BOSTON AND EASTERN MASS, Vol. 3, 1908)
